Tahoe Truckee Composite Squadron

Winter Encampment - 1999

The thirteen Cadets were: R. J. Kato, David DeSantis, Cameron Bartolini, Kevin Emley, Scott Gilmore, Paul

Thirteen of the twenty-six new Cadet Basics from the Tahoe Truckee Composite Squadron sacrificed a week of their Christmas vacation to attend a challenging week of basic training with Cadets from five western states at Indian Springs Auxiliary Air Force Base near Las Vegas. Captain Tony DeSantis and Lieutenant Ron Kato, who served as Tactical Officers during the action packed week, escorted them. The "Boot Camp" style training kept the Cadets busy from 6:00 AM until 10:00 PM every day.

Highlights of the week were the many tours at Nellis AFB and Indian Springs AFB. They visited Peace Park (a static display of Air Force fighter aircraft), the Thunderbirds' hanger; Air Traffic Control Tower, Crash Crew fire station, Base Security Headquarters, Base Operations, Mobile Medical and Weather Units, and saw the "Predator" (a pilot less, reconnaissance aircraft) fly practice missions. The Preditor While learning to be military leaders, they attended over 15 hours of classroom instruction on Drug Reduction, Aerospace Education, USAF Organization, Careers and Opportunities, Leadership, Moral Leadership, Cadet Programs and Scholarships, Community Emergency Services, National and International Activities, and how to locate and help a "Downed" aircraft and passengers using an "ELT" finder in a Ground Search and Rescue Mission. They, also, all went on and flew a Cessna-182.
